Etna and the little volcano of Mojo
We will take you on a full day adventure, specially designed to discover the diversity of the Etna slopes’ nature. We will mount the Southern side to visit the small volcanic towns of Santa Venerina and Zafferana Etnea. The latter is famous for its honey. We will stop in a family honey production to taste their best delicacies.
We will move towards the lava flow of 1991 to take some impressive pictures. From the southern-east side we will start our ascent to the “Mongibello” - the local name of the volcano, which means “the beautiful mountain”.
We will pass through the floods of solid lava, burnt trees and unique volcanic landscapes up to our arrival at the northern side of the volcano - Piano Provenzana, at the altitude of 1881m above sea level.
This area was completely destroyed during the last eruption in 2002, it is still in the process of restructuring.
From this point we will enjoy the view of the Central Crater and will take a little stroll around the unspoiled nature of this region.
The descent from the northern side lead us to the road which overlooks the lava-stone villages of Linguaglossa, Rovittello, Solicchiata and Passopisciaro.
After the lunch in a chosen restaurant, we continue driving towards the town of Mojo Alcantara to meet a small volcano on 800m above sea level. It was born before Etna, about 600 000 years ago and is considered as a creator of the famous Alcantara Gorges. With the same eruption lava came to the nowadays town of Giardini Naxos. We will make our last photo stop on the panoramic terraces above the Alcantara Gorges.
