Catania, Aci Castello and the Islands of the Cyclops
We meet and greet you from the port of Siracusa and start our journey. One of the liveliest cities in Southern Italy, Catania is a bustling town with a melting pot attitude. This baroque gem is a vibrant and enthralling place with energy to sell and a beautiful UNESCO listed historic centre.
Grandiose black and white palazzos tower over baroque piazzas and seething markets. We head for the centre of Catania. Our walk down the famous shopping area the Via Etnea will take in the luscious green Villa Bellini, admire the beautiful Duomo and experience the chaotic Fish market.
Our next stop is Aci Castello; you will get some great photo opportunities of this fantastic Normans built castle, and picturesque fishing village. We move onto Aci Trezza, a pretty fishing village 10km North of Catania where we are greeted by 3 large lave made boulders in the middle of
the ocean Set on the coast. According to one of many local myths, these great stones are the ones hurled by Polyphemus at Ulysses boat from the summit
of Etna after being blinded in one eye by Ulysse. Aci Trezza is also famous for its love affair with the writer Giovanni Verga, here he wrote his most famous
novel La Malavoglia (The house by the Medlar tree). A small museum relating to the book can also be visited in this quaint little town.
Our journey back to the port of Siracusa will be finished with an all-important ice cream stop.
