Caltagirone and Piazza Armerina
This is a full day excursion featuring: a combination of the famously discovered Mosaics and the city of Caltagirone renowned for the production of traditional Sicilian ceramics. Caltagirone is an attractive hilltop town and is home to the art of producing hand crafted colourful ceramics. The areas high quality clay has supported production for more than 1000 years.
Piazza Armerina is home to the most magnificent Roman mosaics in Western Europe. A landslide in the 12th Century mean that the Villa Romana home to the mosaics lay beneath 10 metres of mud for 700 years and thus protected from the damaging effects of air wind and rain.
You will be collected from your preferred location and we will drive through the heart of Sicily admiring the dramatic landscapes and various hilltop towns on route. We arrive at Piazza Armerina and visit the Roman “Villa del Casale”.
The mosaics will leave you mesmerised and prepare you for the huge Baroque Cathedral standing in the Duomo.
Time will be allocated for lunch, your driver will advise depending on your requirements.
We head to Caltagirone; we visit the museum of ceramics, stroll around and view some of the 120 ceramic shops selling original pieces by renowned local artists.
Wander around the perfectly manicured public gardens and take a leisurely walk up the emphatic Scalinata di Santa Maria del Monte (the town’s celebrated ceramic inlaid staircase). Heading back through the stunning countryside your day will finish with an all-important Sicilian ice cream stop.
